Andrew Jackson Short Biography
Born 15 March 1767 in the Waxhaws region (exact location unknown), United States, Andrew Jackson was an American soldier and the seventh president of the United States.
Originally hailing from Ireland, Jackson’s family migrated to the United States. His father died just before he was born, leaving his mother and two older brothers to raise him.
As a teenager, Jackson and his brothers became soldiers in the Revolutionary War. He and his brother Robert were captured and held as prisoners by the British Army, cementing his hatred for the British.
In 1784 he went on to study law under Spruce Macay, and three years later he joined the North Carolina state bar.
After some time, Jackson continued to practice law and became a landowner. In 1812 Jackson commanded U.S. troops to victory, defeating British-allied Indians claiming the land for America, now known to be Georgia and Alabama. He was appointed a major general for his military success.
Jackson ran for U.S. Senate in 1823, and in 1828 won the presidency over John Quincy Adams in a landslide.
One of his more notable achievements as president was his implementation of veto power, which he used in July 1832 when he vetoed the re-charter of the Second Bank of the United States due to the bank’s monopoly of power.
