Benjamin Hoff Short Biography

Born in 1946 in West Haven-Sylvan, Oregon, United States, Benjamin Hoff is the author of The Tao of Pooh, a book explaining the practices of Taoism through the characters of Winnie the Pooh.

Hoff was a student of The Evergreen State College, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Asian Art in 1973. Hoff had also studied Asian Culture. 

Before his career as an author, Hoff found some odd jobs such as an antique restorer, tree pruner, and photojournalist.

Hoff published The Tao of Pooh in 1982, the book was meant as an introduction of the beliefs of Taoism for Westerners to better understand. It became an international bestseller and was on the New York Times bestseller list for 49 weeks.

In 1993, Hoff published his sequel The Te of Piglet, which stayed on the New York Times bestselling list for 59 weeks.

In 2006, Hoff published an essay entitled “Farewell to Authorship” where he formally resigned from book writing and publicly criticized the publishing industry.

Hoff has written a total of 11 books and, in 1988, was the recipient of the American Book Award.
