Christopher Columbus Short Biography

Born before 31 October 1451 in Genoa, Republic of Genoa (part of present-day Italy), Christopher Columbus was an explorer and navigator who paved the way for European exploration and colonization of the Americas.

As a child, Columbus had shown interest in sea voyage. Between 1482 to 1485 he began trading along the coasts of West Africa. During this time, he gained knowledge of Portuguese navigation.

Columbus finally received royal support for his first Atlantic crossing in January 1492 from King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain. Columbus’ first voyage aimed to spread Christian faith, obtain gold and riches, and acquire herbs and spices.

His first voyage was an attempt to find a safer route to China and India, but on August 3, 1492, Columbus found the Americas instead. His New World findings quickly spread throughout Europe.

Columbus embarked on two other voyages before his fourth and final voyage on May 11, 1502. A year later, he would come across the Cayman Islands, naming them Las Tortugas after the abundance of sea turtles found there.

Thanks to Columbus’ travels, he was able to bring new crops and live animals back to the Old World which radically changed humankind and the way of life.
