Chuck Daly Short Biography

Born 20 July 1930 in Saint Marys, Pennsylvania, United States, Charles Jerome Daly was an American basketball coach.

Daly graduated from Bloomsburg University Pennsylvania in 1952, and after serving two years in the military, started his career in coaching basketball.

In 1955, Daly coached the high school basketball team of Punxsutawney Area High School for eight seasons.

He started coaching college-level basketball in 1963 and was an assistant coach at Duke University. Six years later Daly would become the head coach at Boston College.

After his success in coaching college basketball, Daly decided to move on to the big leagues, and in 1978 he started his NBA coaching career as an assistant coach for the Philadelphia 76ers.

Daly had a short run with the Cleveland Cavaliers but ultimately returned to the Philadelphia 76ers until he was hired by the Detroit Pistons as their head coach in 1983.

The Detroit Pistons would go on to win the NBA championships in 1989 and 1990, an accomplishment never before achieved until the arrival of Daly.

Daly was head coach of the U.S. Dream Team during the 1992 Olympics, winning the gold for America in Barcelona.

In 1994 and 1996, Chuck Daly was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and was honored as 10 of the best coaches in NBA History during the 50th anniversary.
