Dante Alighieri Short Biography
Born in 1265 in Florence, Italy, Dante Alighieri was a poet and writer who is most famously known for his Divine Comedy or La Commedia.
There are not many details known about Alighieri’s life and most accounts are written by Alighieri himself. In his writing about his life, he pays tribute to many writers and poets who came before him who he sees as his mentors.
Little is known about his education; it is believed that he may have been homeschooled or enrolled in a chapter school.
Alighieri was exiled from Florence in 1302, and it is during this exile that the idea for La Commedia was born.
It took Alighieri 12 years to finish writing La Commedia. He started in 1308 and published the long narrative poem in 1320, a year before his death.
Dante’s Divine Comedy is considered one of the most impressive works of the literary world. Over time the Divine Comedy has been divided into three books; Inferno, Purgatorio, and Paradiso.
