Edwin Hubbell Chapin Short Biography

Born on 29 December 1814 at Union-Village, Washington County, New York, Edwin Hubbell Chapin was a preacher and the editor of the Christian Leader, and was known for his oratory skills.

Chapin received his formal education at a seminary in Vermont. In 1838, he completed a course in theological studies and was ordained a pastor in the same year.

Two years later Chapin moved to Massachusetts and obtained a pastorate for the School Street Society. In 1848 he became pastor for the Church of Divine Paternity in New York drawing in crowds of listeners every Sunday for the thirty years he served.

Chapin was also the author of the poem Ocean Burial which was then made into a popular sailor’s song. In 1847, he authored several works such as Crown of Thorns and Discourses on The Lord’s Prayer.

Chapin was made an honorary member of the National Academy of Design in 1854.

Fourteen years after his death the Chapin Memorial Church was dedicated to him in his honor.
