Ed White Short Biography

Born 14 November 1930, Edward Higgins “Ed” White II, was a U.S. Air Force officer, NASA Astronaut and the first American to walk in space.

In 1952, he followed in his father’s footsteps, graduating from the U.S. Military Academy, West Point, and enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. Seven years later he earned his master’s degree in aeronautical engineering, in the same year, NASA had selected its astronauts for Project Mercury.

NASA had started recruiting for its next generation of human spaceflight, Project Gemini. Out of 200 applicants, Ed White and eight other pilots were chosen as NASA’s new recruits. They were famously nicknamed, “NASA’s Next Nine.”

White and a fellow astronaut had been selected for the very ambitious Gemini 4 mission. The mission would dub Ed White as the first American to walk in space. This feat brought much pride to the American people. Etching his name in history, forever.

On January 27, 1967, during the Apollo 1 dry test, a fire broke out in the cabin, claiming White, Gus Grissom, and Roger Chaffee.

In 1997 White was posthumously awarded the Congressional Space Medal of Honor
