Ella Jane Fitzgerald Short Biography

Born on 25 April 1917 in Newport News, Virginia, United States, Ella Jane Fitzgerald was an African-American jazz singer who was considered to be the Queen of Jazz.

Fitzgerald first discovered her singing talent at a talent show in 1934. Four years later, Fitzgerald released her version of the popular children’s rhyme “A Tisket, A Tasket” and this brought her major fame and notoriety when it became a hit song on the radio.

Fitzgerald became the band leader of Ella and Her Famous Orchestra and recorded nearly 150 songs with them. In the early 1940s, Fitzgerald started including scatting to her singing style.

In 1945, Fitzgerald’s recording of “Flying Home” was released and was considered “one of the most influential vocal jazz records of the decade” by The New York Times. (Source)

A documentary on Ella Fitzgerald’s life was released in 2019 entitled Ella Fitzgerald Just One of Those Things and was directed by Leslie Woodhead.
