Ellen Ochoa Short Biography
Born 10 May 1958, in Los Angeles, California, United States, Ellen Ochoa is an American astronaut, the first Hispanic woman in space, and the first Hispanic director of the Johnson Space Center.
Ochoa graduated in 1980 from San Diego State University with a Bachelor of Science in physics. And in 1981 and 1985 earned her Master’s in Science and Ph.D. respectfully, for Electrical Engineering.
She was chosen to become a NASA astronaut in July 1991. Ochoa became part of NASA Astronaut Group 13.
In April of 1993, she was launched into space aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery. It was during this mission that she became the first Hispanic woman in space.
In the course of her time with NASA, she was also working in Mission Control when the news of the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster came in and was one of the first people who were informed of the failed mission.
Ochoa became director of the Johnson Space Center in 2013 and retired from the position 5 years later.
As of July 2020, Ellen Ochoa is currently a board member of the National Science Board.
