Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel Short Biography

Born on 27 August 1770 in Stuttgart, Württemberg, Germany, Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel was a philosopher, author, and a key component among classical German philosophers.

In 1788 he entered the Tübinger Stift, a Protestant Seminary, and became roommates with Friedrich Hölderlin and F.W.J. Schelling, they inspired each other’s ideas and celebrated the victories of the French Revolution at the time.

From 1793-1796 he was employed as a house tutor for an affluent German family, and in 1797 he moved to Frankfurt, still under the same profession.

In Frankfurt, he wrote his famous essay, The Spirit of Christianity and Its Fate.

In January 1801, Hegel moved to Jena and became an unpaid lecturer, in the same year he finished his first book The Difference Between Fichte’s and Schelling’s Systems of Philosophy.

He became a rector for the Egidiengymnasium, a prominent school in Protestant Germany, in 1808-1816. Here he inspired many of his students and taught philosophical sciences.

Georg Hegel is considered one of the greatest thinkers in Western Philosophy’s history.

His many works include The Phenomenology of the Spirit (1807), Science of Logic (1812), and Encyclopedia of Philosophical Sciences (1817).
