Heraclitus Short Biography

Born in 540 BCE in Ephesus, Anatolia, Heraclitus of Ephesus was a famous Greek philosopher and a cosmologist.

Unfortunately, little is known about Heraclitus’ life and education. Most of the information gathered about his personal life is through the accounts of other people.

Throughout his life as a philosopher, Heraclitus was considered a misanthrope and was known as the “weeping philosopher” due to his depression and melancholy.

Heraclitus believed, as other philosophers believed in other elements, that fire was the origin of the world. He only has one known public work entitled “On Nature,” only fragments of this can be found in the works of other philosophers.

Heraclitus was also a believer in the unity of opposites, to which he made his famous claim “immortals are mortal, mortals are immortal”. (Source)

As a cosmologist, Heraclitus made his most basic statement about cosmology wherein he mentions the word “kosmos” which originally meant “order” and used it in a way that meant “world”.

Although Heraclitus did not have any pupils who studied under him, his works were great influences to other philosophers who followed.
