Joseph Paul DiMaggio Short Biography

Born on 25 November 1914 in Martinez, California, United States, Joseph Paul DiMaggio was a professional baseball player for the New York Yankees and is considered the best all-around player in the history of baseball.

DiMaggio never finished high school and instead worked odd jobs to make ends meet. He had been playing semi-professional baseball until his brother convinced the manager of the San Francisco Seals to have DiMaggio fill in as shortstop.

In 1936, DiMaggio started playing for the New York Yankees as a centerfielder. He hit 29 home runs during his rookie year and set a franchise record. He also helped get the Yankees to nine World Series titles.

Five years later DiMaggio scored a 56-game hitting streak which the New York Times quoted as “perhaps the most enduring record in sports.” (Source)

DiMaggio was drafted into the United States Army Air Force in 1943 and was released in September 1945 due to stomach ulcers. He returned to the world of baseball shortly after.

Joe DiMaggio retired from pro-baseball on December 11, 1951, and is remembered as a cultural idol.
