John Davison Rockefeller Short Biography

Born on 8 July 1839, in Richford, New York, United States, John Davison Rockefeller was a philanthropist, businessman, and the founder of the Standard Oil Company.

Rockefeller did not graduate college, instead, he took a 10-week business course in bookkeeping at Folsom’s Commercial College.

In September 1855, at sixteen years old Rockefeller got his first job as an assistant bookkeeper.

He started on his first business endeavor in 1859 engaging in the commission business, during its 1st and 2nd year, it earned a significant amount due to the American Civil War.

Rockefeller established his first oil refinery in Ohio in 1863. Seven years later he founded the Standard Oil Company, and in 1881 Rockefeller and 9 other associates created the very first American trust.

In 1882 Rockefeller and the Standard Oil Company had a monopoly of nearly the entire United States oil business.

Later in his life, Rockefeller turned his attention to supporting charities and becoming a philanthropist, and in 1892 he founded the University of Chicago.

Rockefeller’s most prominent business venture could arguably be the Rockefeller Center which was completed in 1939, a hub that was created for art, style, and entertainment, which was thought to be a “city between a city”. (Source)
