John Glenn Short Biography
Born on 18 July 1921 in Cambridge, Ohio, U.S., John Herschel Glenn Jr. was a former senator and the first American Astronaut to orbit the Earth in 1962 – completing three orbits – aboard Friendship 7.
Along with six other pioneers, Scott Carpenter, Gordon Cooper, Gus Grissom, Wally Schirra, Alan Shepard, and Deke Slayton, John Glenn was one of the original members of Mercury Seven chosen by NASA in 1959 to establish the foundation of American’s space exploration.
Before becoming an Astronaut, John Glenn was an eminent marine pilot who fought in WWII, China, and Korea. He was awarded six Distinguished Flying Crosses and eighteen Air Medals for his service to the U.S. Marine Corps.
John Glenn was also the first to make the supersonic transcontinental flight across the United States in 1957.
After his distinguished contribution to the Marine Corps and NASA, John Glenn became a Democratic U.S. senator in his home state, Ohio, in 1974. A year before his retirement in 1998, Glenn flew into space again at age 77 aboard the space shutter Discovery. He made his final record, the oldest person in space.
Glenn was featured in popular movies such as The Right Stuff (1983) and Hidden Figures (2016).
