John Quincy Adams Short Biography

Born 11 July 1767, in Braintree, Massachusetts, United States, John Quincy Adams was the 6th American President and was a force in congress that strongly opposed the expansion of slavery. 

He attended Harvard College in 1787. In the same year, he studied law under Theophilus Parsons until 1789.

In 1796 he was appointed as the Ambassador to Portugal in the same year his father won the United States Presidency. He was elected into the Massachusetts senate in 1802, and a year later he became a member of the United States Senate.

Adams was also a professor at Harvard College for rhetoric and oratory in 1806-1809.

He was selected to become the secretary of state for the cabinet of President James Monroe in 1817, in this time Adams was a key figure in the Monroe Doctrine.

On March 4, 1825, Adams was inaugurated as president, during his term he pursued the grant of territory to the Native Americans.

After his presidential term, Adams served as a leading congressman, during which time he worked to cease acts of slavery until his death.
