Martin Van Buren Short Biography
Born on 5 December 1782 in New York state, Martin Van Buren was the 9th governor of New York, the 10th United States secretary of state, and the 8th Vice-president and President of the United States preceded by Andrew Jackson.
Van Buren was elected the 8th president of the United States in 1836 and served in office from 1837 to 1841.
However, he lost the reelection bid in 1840 to Whig Party, William Henry Harrison due to the Panic of 1837.
Martin Van Buren was given the nicknames “Little Magician,” “Red Fox of Kinderhook,” and “Sly Fox” due to his cunning maneuvers, skills and tactics to land on the winning side of political controversy.
Many consider Van Buren a failed president – partly due to the economic depression and stock market crashed just several months after this election. Nevertheless, the 8th president – a huge admirer of Thomas Jefferson – also made crucial contribution that extended the Jeffersonian and Jacksonian political ideals.
Later when he became an elder statesman and played a critical role of slavery abolitionist. In fact, he was the leader who led the Free Soil Party ticket in the presidential election of 1848.
