Born 12 May 1918 in Hot Wells, Texas, United States, Mary Kathlyn Wagner, also known as Mary Kay Ash, was a businesswoman, entrepreneur, and the founder of Mary Kay Inc.

Ash graduated from high school in 1934 and found a job working for Stanley Home Products as a salesperson 5 years later.

She was so good as a salesperson that in 1952 she was pirated by World Gifts. Ash was an employee at the company for more than a decade but decided to quit when men she had trained were chosen over her to receive promotions.

After leaving World Gifts in 1963, Ash decided to write a book for women on the topic of business. But working on the book had turned into a business plan for her own company.

Ash opened her first store; Beauty By Mary Kay, in Dallas on September 13, 1963, with 9 saleswomen working for her.

She successfully made a profit of nearly $1 million in the first year alone. Ash was known to employ marketing strategies that she would use to uplift her employees such as employee incentives.
