Mike Massimino Short Biography
Born 19 August 1962, in Oceanside, New York, United States, Michael James “Mike” Massimino is a former NASA astronaut and a professor of mechanical engineering at Columbia University.
He graduated with a degree in Industrial Engineering in 1984 from Columbia University. He furthered his studies, earning other degrees, and in 1992 earned his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering.
Massimino found a job as a systems engineer at IBM and worked for the company from 1984 to 1986. In 1987 he started working for NASA as a general engineer in the Office of Aeronautics and Space Technology.
In 1996, Mike Massimino became an official astronaut candidate for NASA and after two years of initial training, he was finally qualified to fly as a mission specialist.
In March 2002, Massimino had performed two spacewalks during the STS-109 Columbia mission flight. And in May 2009, Mike Massimino became the first person to tweet in space, he captioned “From orbit: Launch was awesome!! I am feeling great, working hard, & enjoying the magnificent views, the adventure of a lifetime has begun!” (source)
Upon leaving NASA, Massimino returned to his alma mater to teach an undergraduate engineering course. He is also currently the Senior Advisor for Space Programs at the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum. He is an author, and a frequent guest star on the hit TV show; The Big Bang Theory.
