Before dedicating his life to literature and writing his first book, The Pilgrimage at age 38, Coelho was a lyricist, theatre director, actor, and journalist.

He was determined to be a writer since his teenage years but was discouraged by his parents who saw no prospect in that endeavor in Brazil.

This resulted in a lot of undue conflicts which eventually led to Coelho’s parents committed him to a mental institution when he was 17 (which he escaped 3 times before being released at the age of 20). source
