Peggy Whitson Short Biography
Born 9 February 1960, in Mount Ayr, Iowa, United States, Peggy Annette Whitson was the first female commander of the International Space Station, she also holds the U.S. record for the greatest number of days in space.
Whitson graduated from Iowa Wesleyan College in 1981, with a bachelor’s degree in Biology and Chemistry. She later acquired a doctorate in biochemistry in 1985.
She became a research associate for NASA in 1986 and would become the supervisor of the Biochemistry Research Group at KRUG International.
In 1989, Peggy Whitson began her career at NASA as a Research Biochemist and in 1991 she became a member of the U.S. – USSR Joint Working Group.
After completing 2 years of training and working various technical positions at NASA, Whitson was launched into space on June 5, 2002, where she conducted several experiments in microgravity. Whitson received the honor of being the first NASA Science Officer during the 6-month stay in space.
Peggy Whitson once again made the voyage to space on October 10, 2007, as commander of the Expedition 16 mission.
In 2017 she held the record for the greatest number of hours in space by any NASA astronaut, her total number of days being 665 days.
She was inducted into the Iowa Aviation Hall of Fame in 2011 and received the NASA Space Flight Medal in 2002 and 2008.
