Born on 18 August 1927, in Plains, Georgia, United States, Eleanor Rosalynn Carter is the former First Lady of the United States and a staunch mental health advocate.
She attended Georgia Southwestern College but withdrew herself from school when the family was lacking financially.
Carter met her then to be husband, Jimmy Carter, in her youth. The two married on July 7, 1946 and have stayed married to this day. She continued her studies at home while she tended to the house and her children.
In 1970, Jimmy Carter became the governor of Georgia, Rosalynn became the state’s, First Lady. During her time as First Lady, she used her influence and resources to focus mainly on campaigning for mental health.
In August 1971 she joined a statewide tour that would examine mental health facilities throughout Georgia. Carter was also made an honorary chairperson for the Georgia Special Olympics and held the honor for four years.
During the 1976 presidential elections, Carter herself campaigned to gather support for her husband. In this time, she was elected as a board member for the National Association of Mental Health.
Rosalynn Carter became America’s First Lady in January 1977. She continued to use her clout and impact to further her campaign for mental health advocacies in Congress.
