Thich Nhat Hanh Short Biography
Born on 11 October 1926 in Huế, Thừa Thiên-Huế Province, French Indochina, Thich Nhat Hanh is a Buddhist monk, a spiritual leader, and a peace activist.
At the tender age of 16, Nhat Hanh entered the monastery. He then graduated from Báo Quốc Buddhist Academy and in 1957 he was ordained as a Bhikkhu.
In 1961, Nhat Hanh moved to the United States and became a teacher at Princeton University, where he taught comparative religion. He would also lecture on Buddhism at Columbia University.
In 1966, Nhat Hanh was introduced to Martin Luther King, jr. Nhat Hanh had asked King to speak out against the Vietnam War publicly. King then penned his speech entitled; Beyond Vietnam: A Time to Break Silence.
In the same year, Nhat Hanh established the monastic and lay group the Order of Interbeing, of which he was head. He also founded the School of Youth for Social Service an organization of Buddhist peace workers that would give aid to rural areas.
Nhat Hanh was very influential to the spread of Buddhism and its practices around the world, especially in Western Culture.
