Valentina Tereshkova Short Biography

Born on 6 March 1937, in Maslennikovo, Russia, U.S.S.R, Valentina Vladimirovna Tereshkova a Soviet cosmonaut, was the first woman to travel to space on 16 June 1963.

She started to work in factories, after having left school at sixteen, which inspired future headlines: “Factory-worker becomes first woman to fly into space.” (source)

Although unlike most cosmonauts who had prior experience as pilots, Tereshkova was an experienced amateur parachute jumper. This had worked in her favor for at this time cosmonauts would parachute from their capsules instead of landing their vessels.

In 1962 Valentina Tereshkova had received 18 months of training alongside four other women. Of the five women who had trained, only Tereshkova flew to space.

In 1963, Tereshkova was selected for a dual flight of the Vostok program. On June 16, 1963, she would pilot the Vostok 6, cementing her name in history as the first woman in space.

She received the Hero of the Soviet Union and Order of Lenin award for her historic flight. And was the last woman cosmonaut to fly to space until the 1980s.

She was a member of the Supreme Soviet and was an appointed representative to several international women’s organizations and events.

Valentina Tereshkova is still being celebrated to this day, for her contributions to science and her fierce resolve to be the first woman in space.
