Vincent van Gogh Short Biography

Born on 30 March 1853 in Zundert, Netherlands, Vincent Willem van Gogh was a painter and is considered one of the most famous figures in Western art.

In 1869, van Gogh became an apprentice to Goupil and Co., a company of art dealers, stirring his passion for art.

After experiencing some personal heartbreak, van Gogh yearned to enter the ministry. While at Belgium for missionary work he experienced his first spiritual crisis due to the poverty and hardship he had seen. Van Gogh decided to give away all his earthly possessions.

In 1880, after he was dismissed by the church for his actions, he found his true calling as an artist. He first studied drawing in the Brussels Academy in 1881 and later moved to the Netherlands and began his work with nature.

Van Gogh began to work and experiment with oil paint in 1882. By 1884, van Gogh became surer in his art and began capturing still life, landscape, and figures in his work. At the beginning of 1888, van Gogh’s Post – Impressionist style was established.

Van Gogh’s artistic career only lasted 10 years, from 1880-1890, but within this time he had produced nearly 900 paintings.
