Sally Ride Short Biography

Born on May 26, 1951, in Encino, Las Angeles, California, United States Sally Kristen Ride was the first American woman in space.

During her time in college, she had seen an advertisement from NASA in her school newspaper. Thanks to her natural athletic prowess, she was able to use this to her advantage during her training. 

She was chosen out of 8,000 student applicants and was one of 6 women who were chosen for NASA’s class of 1978. She became part of NASA Astronaut Group 8, the first NASA class to include women.

Sally Ride had graduated training in 1979, after which she was eligible to work as a mission specialist, she then gathered some experience working as a ground-based capsule communicator, and had a hand in developing the Space Shuttle’s “Canadarm”, a robot arm.  

On June 18, 1983, Ride became the first American woman in space as a crew member for the Challenger STS-7 shuttle.

After her retirement, she served as Director of the California Space Science Institute. She had also worked as a physicist and physics professor at the University of California, San Diego. She had also served as a member of the Advisory Board of the National Women’s History Museum.

Her many numerous contributions include; the Sally Ride Science, a nonprofit organization centered on encouraging children from all backgrounds to pursue courses in science, technology, engineering, and math. She is also an author of several children’s books with themes of space exploration.
