Sigmund Freud Short Biography

Born on 6 May 1856 in Freiberg, Moravia, Austrian Empire, Sigismund Schlomo Freud, more popularly known as Sigmund Freud, was a neurologist and the founder of psychoanalysis.

Freud became a student at the University of Vienna in 1873 and entered medical school where he focused on physiology and neurology. He graduated with a Doctor of Medicine degree in 1881.

Freud started his medical career a year later and started working for Vienna General Hospital and did some research on cerebral anatomy.

In 1886, he resigned from the hospital and went into a private practice where he started using hypnosis for his specialization in “nervous disorders”.

It was in 1896 that Freud started using the term “psychoanalysis” to refer to his new clinical method.

Freud published The Interpretation of Dreams in 1899 where he introduces the theory of the unconscious with some notes on dream interpretation. Some consider this to be Freud’s masterwork.

Freud is also the proponent of studies that delve into one’s sexuality and childhood development and has coined many terms that are being used in psychology today.
