Eckhart Tölle Short Biography

Born on 16 February 1948, in Lünen, Germany, Ulrich Leonard Tölle, who later changed his first name to Eckhart, is an author and spiritual leader.

Tölle recounts his childhood in post-war Germany as unhappy, and after his parents separated, he moved to Spain with his father.

At 19 he moved to England, where he taught German and Spanish for 3 years. Tolle would find himself plagued by anxiety and depression.

While in England he enrolled in the University of London, studying philosophy, psychology, and literature.

In 1977 he was offered a position to do post-grad research at Cambridge University, but stopped shortly after. In the same year, he experienced a transformative revelation.

Tölle used his newfound outlook on life to become a counselor and spiritual teacher, and dedicated the next few years of his life to discovering more of himself spiritually.

In 1995 he moved to Canada, and two years later published his first book The Power of Now. Despite its initial lackluster reception, the book gained a spot in The New York Times Best Seller list in 2000 when Oprah Winfrey promoted the book in her magazine.

Eckhart Tölle is the author of several bestselling books such as Stillness Speaks: Whispers of Now (2003), A New Earth: Awakening to Your Life’s Purpose (2005), and Oneness with All Life: Inspirational Selections from A New Earth (2008). He also holds several speaking engagements each year and has his own webinar series.
