36 of the Best John Adams Quotes on Democracy, Freedom and Education to Inspire You
“It is more important that innocence be protected than it is that guilt be punished, for guilt and crimes are so frequent in this world that they cannot all be punished. But if innocence itself is brought to the bar and condemned, perhaps to die, then the citizen will say, ‘whether I do good or whether I do evil is immaterial, for innocence itself is no protection,’ and if such an idea as that were to take hold in the mind of the citizen that would be the end of security whatsoever.”
John Adams
“Public business, my son, must always be done by somebody. It will be done by somebody or other. If wise men decline it, others will not; if honest men refuse it, others will not.”
John Adams
“I fear that in every elected office, members will obtain an influence by noise not sense. By meanness, not greatness. By ignorance, not learning. By contracted hearts, not large souls… There must be decency and respect.”
John Adams
“I will rouse up my mind and fix my attention. I will stand collected within myself and think upon what I read and what I see. I will strive with all my soul to be something more than persons who have had less advantages than myself.”

In 1774 Adams was elected into the Massachusetts delegation and joined the First Continental Congress. During his time in Congress, he rejected the probability of reuniting with the British.

Six years later Adams ran for office but lost the presidency to George Washington, making Adams vice president. As vice president one of his main responsibilities was to oversee Senate functions, he also supported many of Washington’s initiatives.
In 1796 John Adams ran for president. He won against Thomas Jefferson by a small margin and was inaugurated on March 4, 1797. During his term Adams successfully brought an end to the Quasi-War with France, which was considered one of his most notable accomplishments as president.
