Earvin Magic Johnson Short Biography

Born on 14 August 1959 in Lansing, Michigan, United States, Earvin “Magic” Johnson is a former American basketball player and business man.

Johnson entered Michigan State in 1977 and played point guard under Jud Heathcote.

After two years of college basketball, Johnson was drafted into the NBA in 1979 and was picked by the Los Angeles Lakers.

Johnson is the fist rookie ever to be awarded the NBA Finals MVP award in 1982. In the 1981-1982 season the Los Angeles Lakers made the NBA Finals once more, defeating the Philadelphia 76ers.

At the height of his career with the Los Angeles Lakers, during a routine physical check-up, Earvin discovered that he had contracted the HIV/AIDS virus. Upon finding out about his diagnosis Johnson established the Magic Johnson Foundation in an effort to support HIV/AIDS research.

Earvin Magic Johnson retired from the NBA in 1991 but returned to play on the Olympic Dream Team in 1992 (together with Larry Bird and coach Chuck Daly). He permanently retired in 1996.

Magic Johnson was the president of basketball operations for the Los Angeles Lakers in 2017.
