Mitch Albom Short Biography

Born 23 May 1958 in Passaic, New Jersey, United States, Mitchell David Albom is an American author, journalist, and musician.

Albom graduated from Brandeis University in 1979 with a bachelor’s degree in sociology. Afterwards he followed his passion for music and worked as a performer in Europe and America.

After some time, he moved to New York and became a part-time journalist for the Queens Tribune and went on to earn a Master’s degree at Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism.

In 1983 he was hired full time for the Fort Lauderdale News and Sun Sentinel and became a feature writer where his column grew in popularity.

After his time as a columnist, he moved on to writing books. In 1995 he re-kindled a relationship with Morrie Schwartz, his former college professor, who was dying of Lou Gehrig’s disease.

These encounters with his former college professor inspired his award-wining book Tuesdays With Morrie, which helped pay for Schwartz’s medical bills.

Albom also achieved success as a playwright, turning four of his books into Broadway plays.

In 2006 Albom founded the umbrella organization called SAY Detroit, a charity that aides Detroit’s neediest.
