Born 28 October 1955 in Seattle, Washington, United States, William Henry Gates III, more commonly known as Bill, is a philanthropist, software developer, and co-founder of Microsoft Corporation.

At only 13 years old Gates had already written his first software program. As a teenager, he formed a group of programmers that would take on programming projects, such as computerizing their school’s payroll system.

Gates graduated as a National Merit Scholar from Lakeside School in 1972. He enrolled at Harvard College the following year as a pre-law major with mathematics and computer science graduate courses. Gates left Harvard two years later, and never returned to finish his degree.

Upon leaving Harvard, Gates formed Microsoft with his longtime friend Paul Allen. In July 1980, Microsoft was approached by IBM to form a partnership. This partnership aided in Microsoft’s growth into the prime software company in the world. Microsoft Windows released its first market version in November 1985.

For most of his tenure as founder, Gates was in charge of Microsoft’s product strategy, but his primary position at the company was manager and chief executive.
